JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – Lab Officer

The University of North Carolina research team has been conducting research building capacity in northern Vietnam 15 years. We have been conducting a number of randomized control trials (RCTs).The UNC team has expertise with both behavioral and clinical research and has studied a variety of infectious diseases and comorbid conditions in men and women from general and key populations. The UNC-VN was also chosen to conduct  HPTN 083, a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the injectable agent, cabotegravir (CAB LA), for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in HIV-uninfected cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men (MSM and TGW). This is a double blind, two-arm randomized trial and will be implemented in 5 years. We are now seeking a talented, dedicated and committed individual to join our team in Vietnam to conduct a new and exciting research study. This study is conducted in a cooperation with the 198 Hospital and study site for participant recruitments based in Yen Hoa Health Clinic of Cau Giay Health District Center. All the laboratory tests for this research study (except HIV rapid test) will be conducted in Bach Mai Hospital.

                   Based in Hanoi.

Report to:    The UNC Lab Coordinator in Vietnam

POSITION SUMMARY:

The incumbent of this position is responsible for assisting the UNC Lab Coordinator in preparation phase prior site activation. This position will support UNC Lab Coordinator in laboratory activities including laboratory process, research specimen storage and transportation of all laboratories related to UNC’s projects. Assist in on-site monitoring the implementation of research activities at the study sites in the UNC’s study sites in Vietnam.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary duties and responsibilities for the incumbent of this position may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Support Lab Coordinator to coordinate lab activities among Labs of UNC’s partners and UNC’s lab activities to conduct the necessary preparations for Lab component prior the study activation ensuring both quality and timely manner

  2. Assist the Lab Coordinator on procurement and raising Purchase Request of test kits, equipment’s and supplies for laboratory testing to be performed in for UNC research studies.

  3. Participate in field supervision of research testing, specimen storage and transportation for UNC’s research studies

  4. Supervise day-to-day activities of laboratory staff in the study sites;

  5. Provide support for Lab Coordinator in conducting regular training in relevant areas for laboratory UNC partner’s staff and staff in the study sites;

  6. Participate in field supervision of data collection process the implementation of research activities in the study site (frequent travel to study sites required);

  7. Translate project documents (English-Vietnamese-English);

  8. Perform other tasks as requested by the Lab Coordinator and In-Country Director and the principal investigators.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS

  • Medical Doctor in biological or laboratory sciences or Chemical Engineer or relevant fields.

  • One years related work experience in clinical laboratory including experience with laboratory quality control and quality assurance systems and implementation

  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated creative problem solving skills

  • Ability and enthusiasm to learn new areas and willingness to contribute to a dynamic team. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in both Vietnamese and English.

  • Experience with computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, and the Internet.

  • Work experience with NGOs/INGOs is preferred but not mandatory
