Research Analyst (RA), Agriculture for Nutrition and Health, Vietnam (Hanoi, Vietnam)

The CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health, or CRP-A4NH, led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), helps realize the potential of agricultural development to deliver gender-equitable health and nutritional benefits to the poor. A4NH was created to help ensure that agricultural practices, interventions, and policies will maximize health and nutrition benefits, while reducing health risks.

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human nutrition in the tropics, through research aimed at achieving a sustainable food future. CIAT is a member of the CGIAR (www.cgiar.org), a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. CIAT’s research focuses on increasing productivity of key tropical crops, reversing soil and land degradation, and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. CIAT engages with a broad range of institutions and groups for collaborative research, capacity building and knowledge networking in Asia.

CIAT is entrusted with the A4NH country coordination in Vietnam in partnership with Bioversity International, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Wageningen University and Research (WUR). This role includes enabling flagship research activities in Vietnam, engage stakeholders in different topics of A4NH research and capacity development, and connect A4NH with relevant national processes, making A4NH outputs available for country partners, among others tasks.

The Position:

CIAT seeks to hire a Research Analyst (RA) to work with the A4NH country research focal point and research team. The successful candidate will support research, stakeholder communications and policy engagement activities under a broad portfolio of the A4NH research programme in Vietnam.

Job duties will include support to stakeholder communications and engagement, quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, literature reviews and support to preparation of reports, journal manuscripts, and presentations.   Successful candidates will work with the A4NH focal point and research team as well as other partners who straddle academic fields in nutrition, health and economics and work in strong collaborative project teams. Opportunities exist for co-authored publications, conference presentations and travel within Vietnam and internationally.

Essential Duties:

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the coordination process of the A4NH research programme in Vietnam;
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement and research implementation for the A4NH research programme in Vietnam.
  • Conducting literature reviews, preparing presentations and presentation materials as needed.
  • Providing research, analytical and preparation support for meetings, workshops and conferences.
  • Support activities related to communications and knowledge mobilization (media engagement, stakeholder consultations, writing blogs, preparation of research and policy briefs).
  • Travel, as needed, within Vietnam or internationally.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Public Health, Nutrition or related field, Development Studies, Agricultural Economics, Statistics, Economics.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant post-Masters’ work experience.
  • Experience using statistical software packages, especially Stata.
  • Prior work experience with research organizations
  • Excellent spoken and written English; good written skills are crucial.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work independently, and pay close attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills, high energy, ability to multi-task and work well with people.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Vietnam, including to rural areas, and internationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with research, government and development institutions in Vietnam.
  • Experience working with international and national researchers will be an advantage.
  • Experience with and/or exposure to research methods.
  • Knowledge of agriculture, nutrition or health programmes in Vietnam.

Terms of employment:

This is a nationally recruited position for a one-year renewable appointment. The position will be based at the CIAT Asia regional office in Hanoi, Vietnam, and will report directly to CIAT’s Food Systems theme coordinator. The initial renewable contract will be for up to one (1) year, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
