Smoking Kills 40,000 People in Vietnam Yearly

Smoking-related diseases kill over 40,000 people in Vietnam each year, accounting to 100 people per day, according to a recent report. Smoking is one the leading causes of death in Vietnam. Smoking-related fatal diseases like stroke, coronary artery, lung cancer are the leading causes of death for both men and women in Vietnam. Vietnam is among the countries having the highest rates of male tobacco smokers in the world, and is also one of the countries where smoking in public places are popular, affecting the health of non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smokes, according to World Health Organization (WHO). WHO warns that the number of deaths would rise to 70,000 cases in 2030 if there are no effective measures in response to smoking in Vietnam. In Vietnam, according to the above-mentioned global adult tobacco survey, about 30 million people are regularly exposed to smoking at home. (Giao Thong – Transport May 25 p10)
