                        From the JFA Moderator:
AAPD mourns the passing of our great Civil Rights Leader, Mental Health Patients' Rights Advocate, inspiration and friend, Judi Chamberlin. Among many, many other accomplishments in her life, Judi co-founded the American Association of People with Disabilities and was a longtime Board of Directors member for AAPD. We, like all members of the disability community, owe a deep debt to the passion and will of this remarkable woman. Her vision has directed our work for many years and will continue to guide us for years to come.

On the JFActivist Blog and below you will find a selection of the many public announcements and remembrances that have been published since her passing. Please take a moment to remember and visit the virtual memorial set up in honor of Judi at http://judi-chamberlin.virtual-memorials.com/ . Many are also leaving comments on Judi's blog "Life as a Hospice Patient" at http://judi-lifeasahospicepatient.blogspot.com/

If you want to mark Judi's memory in some tangible way, it was her wish that contributions be made to either:

Now More Than Ever: A Legacy of Judi Chamberlin, Rae Unzicker and Justin Dart

Today, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the US National Council on Disability (NCD) historic report, "From Privileges to Rights: People Labeled with Psychiatric Disabilities Speak For Themselves."

Adding to the meaning of today's anniversary, is the recent death of Judi Chamberlin on 16 January 2010. With her friends the late Rae Unzicker and Justin Dart, Judi was widely known as a pioneering bridge- builder between the 'mad movement' and the wider cross-disability independent living movement.

Marca Bristo, who helped champion the report as NCD Chair in 2000, said today, "Judi Chamberlin and Rae Unzicker were the impetus and guiding force behind the NCD report, ever reminding the Council to reject stereotype for fact and to give voice to people with psychiatric disabilities. Ten tears later, the movement is stronger but public policy lags behind much of it still entrenched in paternalism and prejudice. We can and must do better."

Judges Laugh at Arguments that Theaters Aren't Bound by the ADA

From the Hearing Loss Law & Wash. CAP Blog (10/14/10):

Banner Day in Court for People with Hearing Loss...The Arizona Attorney General's Office sued the Harkins theater chain, claiming that the business violated both ADA and Arizona state law by failing to show captioned and described movies...The theaters took the position that ADA does not regulate the contents of their products or services, and that they offer non-captioned movies. "We have the right to choose what services we provide, and that is our choice," said the attorney for the theaters. "We let everyone come into our theaters and see our (non-captioned) movies, and that is what ADA requires us to do."

The judges basically said flat-out that they thought the theater argument is preposterous. Alex Kozinski, the chief judge, said, "What if we took the position that this building is a building with steps, and if someone in a wheelchair wants to come in, they can find somebody to carry them?"

Kozinksi went on, "Actually, that case happened, and some lawyer argued that being able to crawl up the steps was good enough. Today, people are laughing at that argument, andI wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, people are laughing at your argument."

The attorney didn't back down. And the judges started laughing.

                        From the JFA Moderator:
I think we all felt shocked, saddened, and horrified by the news and images of the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti this past week, and many of us lent money, time and support to excellent relief efforts. However, I was pleased to hear about relief organizations that are targeting those victims who are most severely affected, most isolated, most stigmatized and most overlooked by other organizations, those with disabilities. Before the quake approximately 800,000 Haitians were living with a disability. With the destruction of the quake, that number is likely to have increased significantly. Portlight Strategies is on the ground in Haiti providing food, water and other emergency service to our Haitian brothers and sisters with disabilities. Healing Hands for Haiti has been serving Haitians with Disabilities for over 10 years, and despite having suffered serious losses of their own, they are continuing to assist in Port-au-Prince, the capital city.
