On TV5 Monde (French TV) today (Saturday 23), and next Thursday a film on disaster prevention in Viet Nam:
The rage of the monsoon
Lien Tran Thi Kim is a forester-farmer in Vietnam. Greatly concerned by the increasing number of natural disasters she has dedicated herself to a mission of reforestation to limit the effects. In Quang Binh, a province in the centre of Vietnam, the typhoons and flooding are more frequent and violent every year, causing considerable damage and loss. Poor populations, whose subsistence depends on agriculture, fishing and aquaculture are hard hit by the violence of the monsoon and by drought in the summer. Flooded fields, destroyed homes, a lack of drinking water and illness are all trials to which the Vietnamese are subjected every year. What makes matters worse: the country which originally had an exemplary wealth of biodiversity has, little by little, reduced the fauna to allow for the growing population. To produce more and enter into the international economic scene the country has deprived itself of one of the main sources of protection against the power of the heavy rainfall: the forests...
