[Ngo Climate Change] Workshop on Private Sector together with Government on Promoting Disaster Preparedness and Response to be held on 01 June 2010

First of all, we would like to send you our warmliest regards and  
sincere thanks to your strong cooperation.

As you may be aware that on 1st December, 2009, DDMFSC and VCCI have  
collaborated with ADPC to hold the National Forum on ?Promoting  
partnership between Public-Private Sector and Vulnerable Community in  
Flood Risk Reduction in the Mekong Delta? in Ho Chi Minh city  with  
the chairman of HE. Dao Xuan Hoc ? Vice Minister of MARD. The Forum  
has been participated by more than 60 attendants from MARD, MRCs,  
VNMC, DDMFSC, businessmen, provincial partners and mass media. The  
main purpose of the forum is to make people aware of the potential  
impacts of climate change in Mekong Delta in the near future and  
proposed cooperation mechanism between local authorities and  
public-private partners in disaster risk management. The forum  
emphasis the fact that traditionally more are focused on disaster  
recovery and relief while disaster preparedness and prevention before  
disaster have not received sufficient attention. This forum,  
therefore, wants to transfer a moto that ?investment of 1 dolar in  
disaster preparedness will save 7 dollars for recovery?. In the forum,  
businesses are encouraged to support and cooperate with local  
authorities in disaster preparedness and prevention activities in the  
Cuu Long Delta. There are many risk reduction activities that need  
their support such as Capacity buiding, Public Awareness raising,  
Flood School Safety Program, Production of Information, Education and  
Communication materials, etc. In return, businesses?s logo will be put  
in the cover of books or billboards or the campaign with  
acknowledgement of their contribution through activities supported by  
businesses. This will help businesses build a good brand with  
potential customers and promote a good company profile.

Following this forum, An Giang Committee for Flood and Storm Control  
in cooperation with An Giang Bussiness Association (ABA) has initiated  
a same kind of workshop. Together, An Giang PCFSC and ABA have  
developed a general report on disaster damages, activities conducted  
and status of cooperation and support from private sectors to disaster  
management in the province. In the report, it is also point out the  
need of cooperation between local authorities, community and private  
sector to strengthen capacity on disaster preparedness. A short  
introduction on existing strategy and action plan in the province was  
also shared in the report. After consulting with An Giang People?s  
Committee and conducting series of discussion with technical support  
from FEMS 2 project (Component 4 of MRC?s FMMP ? Phase 2), a  
provincial strategy on advocacy of private sectors to participate in  
disaster preparedness activities was developed with a clear cut of  
public awareness activities that private sector can participate and  
conduct and cooperation approaches between local authorities and  
private sector in implementing awareness activities. A provincial  
workshop with title of ?Private sector together with Government in  
Promoting Disaster Preparedness and Response? will be held on 01 June  
2010 at Conference Hall of An Giang People?s Committee with  
participation of 60 most potential enterprises in the province,  
DDMFSC, provincial line agencies and NGOs, media, etc. The purpose of  
this workshop is to enhance awareness of private sectors on need of  
disaster preparedness, acknowledge the role and responsibilities of  
private sectors to community in term of disaster preparedness and  
advocate contribution and cooperation of private sectors in disaster  
preparedness to assist the province to implement their Provincial  
Strategy 2020 and Project 1002.
