Subject: CARE Climate Jobs, Tools, Videos and Rio & Bonn Updates
Dear PECCN Supporters,
Please enjoy the most recent news from those working to respond to a
changing climate at CARE. Read on for the latest job announcements, new
tools and videos, and updates on the Rio+20 Summit and the Bonn climate
meeting.
JOBS:
. CARE Australia has posted 3 new climate change-related jobs in
Timor Leste, Vietnam & Vanuatu. Details are at
www.careclimatechange.org/jobs/care-jobs. Please note that the application
deadlines are fast approaching.
NEW TOOL:
. e-Learning modules on integrating Climate Change Adaptation in
Disaster Risk Reduction: The e-Learning modules are brought to you by the
Strengthening Community-based Disaster Risk Management in Asia (SCDRM+)
Project. The e-Learning modules form part of a comprehensive regional
learning curriculum for key government, civil society and community
representatives from the SCDRM+ project countries.

NEW DIGITAL PHOTO STORY VIDEOS:
. Through the Adaptation Learning Programme for Africa (ALP), ALP
staff and local journalists are learning how to work with community members
to develop and share their personal stories about how they are impacted by
climate change, as well as seeking and finding adaptation solutions. Watch
videos from Kenya, Niger and Ghana at www.careclimatechange.org/videos.
RIO+20 SUMMIT:
. CARE International has produced an advocacy report and related
human interest stories for the Rio+20 Earth Summit that will be shared at a
June 13th launch. We will send more information; and you can watch the CARE
Climate Change website for details. (www.careclimatechange.org)
WHERE THE RAIN FALLS AT RIO+20:
The Where the Rain Falls team will join PECCN and other CARE staff members
in Rio de Janeiro for the Rio+20 Summit in late June. At this event, Where
the Rain Falls will distribute a brochure on the project, as well as screen
a short introductory video showing human stories relating to their research
in Tanzania. The team's presence in Rio will coincide with the launch of
the Where the Rain Falls website in mid-June (www.wheretherainfalls.com
<http://www.wheretherainfalls.com/> ). This event will act as a prelude to
the launch of the project's findings at the UNFCCC COP18 in Doha, Qatar, in
late November. The Where the Rain Falls project is an 8-country study on the
relationship among rainfall variability, food and livelihood security, and
human mobility. It is a partnership between CARE International and the UN
University's Institute for Environment and Human Security designed to
enhance the capacity of governments, civil society, local communities and
the private sector to better understand and effectively address the
relationship among these issues in some of the world's most vulnerable
countries and communities. The partnership is generously supported the AXA
Group and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. For further
information on this project please contact Kimberly Bennett,
bennett at carefrance.org.
WHERE THE RAIN FALLS BONN UPDATE:
In our last PECCN supporter email, we highlighted a host of activities from
CARE staff attending the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change meetings. Following is
a continuation of that coverage with news from Where the Rain Falls about
their activities at the event:
As part of CARE's activities in Bonn and the Where the Rain Falls project,
CARE and UN University held a roundtable discussion with a group of
adaptation delegates to share results of 8-country study on the relationship
among rainfall variability, food and livelihood security, and human mobility
and to spark initial dialogue on the policy reflections associated with the
findings. The research, conducted in Peru, Guatemala, Ghana, Tanzania,
Thailand, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh, is the first phase of the project.
The initial findings reflect shifting rainfall patterns in the communities
that participated in the research, the consequent impacts on their food and
livelihood security, and the profile of households that use migration as a
risk management strategy to deal with food and livelihood insecurity and
rainfall variability. The research--which included household surveys,
participatory research approach and expert interviews--distills the ways in
which rainfall variability is impacting vulnerable households, through
variations in social and economic assets in communities, and can enable
communities and governments to better identify means of increasing
communities' and individuals' adaptive capacity. The partnership team (see
description of partners in Rio+20 update above) leveraged the opportunity of
Bonn to engage in initial discussions with delegates about the research to
ensure that the findings and subsequent dissemination of recommendations are
well-targeted and of maximum value to policymakers at a global, national,
and local level. In the coming months, Where the Rain Falls will launch a
comprehensive website (www.wheretherainfalls.org), videos, and other media
material to raise awareness about rainfall variability, food insecurity,
adaptation and human mobility. The global report will be launched at the
UNFCCC 18th Conference of the Parties in Doha, Qatar in December.
Cheers, Tamara
