Gia Lai: Asiatic black bear seized

On July 19, a local resident was caught in Pleiku City by the Environmental Crime Prevention Unit of the Gia Lai Police with a large cache of wildlife, including a frozen Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus), two bags of king cobras (Ophiophagus Hannah), a common rat snake (Ptyas mucosus), one kilogram of tockays (Gekko gecko) and a pair of gaur (Bos gaurus) horns. The suspect claimed that the collection had been transported from another district for sale and has been taken into custody. The wildlife exhibits are being held by authorities for further investigation.

Khanh Hoa: Langur killers will be prosecuted

On July 16, the Khanh Hoa Forest Protection Department (FPD) completed their prosecution proposal for police in the case of three hunters found responsible for killing seven langurs in Van Ninh District on July 6. The case involves the deaths of five female and two male black-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nigripes). According to the Khanh Hoa FPD, the killing of langurs is open to criminal prosecution as the species is categorized as rare and endangered and protected under Vietnamese law.

Hai Duong: Taiwanese manufacturer illegally discharges wastewater 

Tung Kuang, a Taiwanese manufacturer of aluminum frames in Hai Duong, will face legal proceedings for illegally discharging wastewater and polluting the air. On April 13, Tung Kuang was caught discharging wastewater into the Ghe River by the local Environmental Police Agency. The wastewater was found containing toxic chemicals such as Chrome 6, manganese, and iron, all exceeding legal limits. The factory has a wastewater treatment system, but still discharges untreated water through an underground pipe network 60cm below the river’s surface. It is estimated that since October 2008, the company has been saving up to 100 million VND each month by discharging wastewater directly into the river.

Bac Lieu: Reticulated python caught

On July 16, a reticulated python (Python reticulates) 5.4m long and weighing 100kg was captured by staff at the Bac Lieu Bird Center. The python is being allowed to remain uncaged at the center while staff wait for authorities to find suitable relocation options.

Ha Tinh: Lesser adjutant released back into the wild
On July 20, the Ha Tinh FPD reported that a local resident purchased a strange wild bird, similar to a pelican. Being aware that it was a rare bird, the resident voluntarily transferred it to the Thach Ha Forest Protection Agency. It was confirmed later as being a lesser adjutant (Leptotilos javanicus), a rare species categorized as endangered and protected under Vietnamese law. It was later released into the Ke Go Nature Reserve Center by the Ha Tinh FPD.

Workshop on implementation of Decree 65/2010/NĐ-CP and Decree 69/2010/NĐ-CP 
On July 26, a workshop on how to implement and publicize Decree 65/2010/NĐ-CP and Decree 69/2010/NĐ-CP will be held by Vietnam’s Environmental Administration - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The Government issued Decree 65 on June 11, 2010, and detailed a number of articles on the Biodiversity Law that takes effect on July 30. The workshop will further explain the content of the law and some other important aspects, such as criteria to classify conservation zones and for identifying endangered, precious and rare species that appear in the protected species list. Decree 69 focuses on genetically modified species, the production of genetically modified species and hereditary samples.

ASEAN exhibition on biodiversity

>From August 3-7, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), on behalf of the Government of Vietnam and in cooperation with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), will organize an ASEAN exhibition on biodiversity that will highlight the importance of biodiversity in Bach Thao Botanic Garden. The exhibition will focus on two main issues: biodiversity conservation and understanding challenges, risks and threats to biodiversity conservation. Supporting events, such as talks and orientation activities towards biodiversity conservation in Vietnam will also be held. The exhibit will feature 28 ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHPs), including four in Vietnam, Ba Be, Chu Mom Ray, Hoang Lien, Kon Ka Kinh, and will showcase the values of biodiversity.
