Dong Nai: Authorities cooperate to end wildlife crime

In January and early February, Dong Nai police, provincial Military Command, and the provincial Forest Protection Department came together in a crackdown on restaurants and residences, confiscating large quantities of live and frozen wildlife. The cooperative effort came about in order to protect forests and manage wildlife products in the province.

Young man's passion for wild animals leads to popular website

A love of wild animals and desire for increased community awareness about the need to protect wildlife facing extinction led a 33 year old man to create the website www.thegioidongvat.org. Launched in 2009, the website provides the most accessible information about wildlife available to the public in Vietnam and receives 10,000 visitors each day and becomes more popular. It also organizes trips to reservation areas at Tam Dao and Ha Long, which has captured the attention of many young children, along with the important support of their parents.

Gia Lai: Seizure of Asiatic black bear 
According to a report from the online newspaper Dan Tri, a dead Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus) was transferred to the Gia Lai provincial museum by law enforcement authorities from Pleiku City. The bear was part of evidence seized from wildlife crime cases in 2010 and was preserved to display at the museum.

Binh Dinh: Green sea turtle released 
On February 10, an approximately 70kg green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) was caught and then released on the same day by a local fisherman in Binh Dinh province. 

 

The Green sea turtle is one of five rare sea turtle species and can be found in Vietnam. According to CITES, the turtle heads the list of endangered species threatened with extinction, and is forbidden by Vietnamese law to be exploited or used for commercial purposes.

Bac Lieu, Soc Trang: Home to many wildlife restaurants 
Bac Lieu and Soc Trang provinces are home to a plethora of restaurants which buy wildlife such as snakes and birds to sell as wildlife dishes. A reporter from the Quan Doi Nhan Dan online newspaper has called for local authorities to develop ways to prevent restaurants from this carrying out this practice.

Treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals by reeds                                                          

A recent examination into the use of reeds to treat wastewater at a tin factory in Thai Nguyen was successfully carried out by scientists from the Center for Experimental Biology at the Institute of Technology Application. The results of the study were published in the second edition of Biological magazine in 2011. This method has been applied to treat polluted water of some rivers and waste water from hospitals in Vietnam.

Journalist ventures to see the rare Cao Vit black crested gibbon
In 2002, the detection of 30 black crested gibbons (Nomascus nasutus nasutus) in Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province surprised the world as the species was thought to be extinct for 43 years. Up to 2009 and after conservation efforts, 97 black crested gibbons could be recorded as divided into 17 groups, in which 14 were in the forests of Vietnam and the remaining three groups living in Chinese forests. Well-known Vietnamese journalist, Mr. Do Doan Hoang, wrote an article about the long and difficult journey he made to see the gibbon, especially to listen to their whistle.
