EDUCATION:
2005 – 2009. PhD in molecular biology and evolutionary genetics of ageing, University College London Supervisor: Professor Dame Linda Partridge CBE FRS FRSE FMedSci Thesis title: Epic studies of dietary restriction, feeding behaviour and insulin signalling in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.
Abstract of research: A major discovery in the field of ageing research is that single gene mutations can extend lifespan in insects and mammals. These genes are evolutionary conserved and point towards the insulin signalling pathway. For my doctoral studies, I disrupted a major component of this pathway, known as Akt, by either mutation or RNA interference in the fruit fly, and then measured the survival of these fly populations compared to its controls. Consequently, I confirmed that flies do indeed live longer when the activity of this pathway is reduced. One possible way of reducing the activity of this pathway is by a technique known as “dietary restriction” – reducing an organism’s nutrient intake without malnutrition, which alone has also been shown to counter ageing. With such a technique, it would be useful to know how much flies actually consume. Thus, another aspect of my PhD involved observing and statistically modelling the feeding behaviour of fruit flies over an extended period of time, which eventually led to the development of a novel method to measure food intake in flies over their entire lifespan.
2002 – 2005. B.Sc. (Hons) Genetics, University College London
Upper second class honours. Modules included: biochemistry, evolutionary genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, paleoanthropology, statistics and bioinformatics.

RESEARCH RELATED EXPERIENCE:
Summer 2003. David Gems Laboratory, Institute of Healthy Ageing
I conceived and obtained funding from the Genetics Society for a studentship that attempted to identify, by RNA interference, the direct biochemical determinants of longevity in Caenorhabtidis elegans. Notably during the project, I established a novel protocol for measuring trehalose in order to determine its role in C. elegans ageing.
Summer 2000. Dept. of Paediatrics, UCL Medical School, The Rayne Institute
Work experience during my GCSE studies in a laboratory researching Batten disease. During the time, I learnt basic PCR and DNA sequencing techniques.
SKILLS ACHIEVED:
Research skills
- Statistical analyses and handling of large data sets e.g. mortality and population analysis.
- Designing and optimising novel protocols for research. - Molecular biology techniques including Western and Northern blotting, molecular
cloning, qPCR, SDS-PAGE, immunoprecipitation, kinase assays, and DNA sequencing. - Confocal microscopy and imaging. - Handling of unsealed radioactive sources and materials. - Drosophila and Caenorhabtidis elegans husbandry.
Communication and teaching skills
- Author of scientific articles: I am adept at writing and preparing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, which demonstrates skill in coordinating and liaising with fellow scientists; organising and structuring data within a group; and corresponding and discussing topics with reviewers.
- Conference speaker: I am highly experienced with preparing and delivering research posters and computer slide presentations and talks.
- University tutor: I have provided tuition classes to undergraduates at UCL as part of courses relating to genetics and evolutionary biology.
- University demonstrator: I supervised and demonstrated practical laboratory techniques to undergraduates studying biochemistry and biology at UCL.
- Assistant instructor in jujitsu: I have experience of organising and teaching self defence to student classes at my university jitsu club.
Other relevant skills
- Fluent in spoken Cantonese and Mandarin. - Advanced computer literacy. I am proficient in Windows, Unix, Retrospect, DNAstar,
SAS statistics, Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, as well as management of online databases. During my PhD, I provided computer support for the lab, which included troubleshooting computer problems and backing-up the lab research data for members of the lab.
OTHER EMPLOYMENT:
2007 – 2010. Abercrombie and Fitch, UK (sales associate)
This was a part-time job during my PhD where I was responsible for maintaining outstanding customer service, generating sales, merchandising, and safeguarding company assets. This demonstrates good interpersonal skills and effective time management.
2001 – 2002. Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd (administration staff)
This was a part-time job after school, where I was responsible for synchronising the price of merchandise between the shop floor and the checkout computer display software. This required the ability to work independently, demonstrating attention to detail to achieve weekly deadlines.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS:
I have an interest in martial arts and was a former President of the University College London Jitsu Club during my postgraduate studies. In my administration, I expanded the club with new members and organised the club’s successful participation in national tournaments, securing the UCL Sports Club of the Year Award. I am currently assistant instructor of the Jitsu club teaching students the basic principles of self defence. During my undergraduate studies, I was the sports officer for the ABACUS society, a society which brought together British and Chinese students. I was responsible for creating and coaching a football team which went on to win the University of London inter-collegiate league within a period of two years. I still play football on a regular basis. I am currently travelling from London to India via Europe, Russia, Mongolia, China and Nepal without air travel.
