In Vietnam, colorectal cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer among men, following liver, lung, and stomach cancers, and the third most common among women, after breast and lung cancers, said Director of Hanoi-based Bach Mai Hospital Associate Professor-Dr. Dao Xuan Co.
Speaking at a workshop titled “Advances in Colorectal Cancer Surgery” held at Bach Mai Hospital on December 7, Dr. Co underscored the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary collaboration, laparoscopic surgery, and multimodal treatment in saving lives and improving patients’ quality of life.
Over the years, Bach Mai Hospital has maintained strong collaboration with France in various fields, particularly in surgery, which has enabled Vietnamese surgeons to master advanced techniques shared by French experts, Dr. Co noted.
At the workshop, Professor Eric Rullier from Bordeaux University, France, introduced innovative approaches to colorectal cancer treatment, including methods to avoid permanent colostomy.
In 2020, Vietnam reported 16,426 new colorectal cancer cases and 8,203 related deaths. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
