Improving Poverty Reduction Efficiency in Mountainous Districts of Vietnam Thai Nguyen

 

In the work of sustainable poverty reduction in Dong Hy district in Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Nguyen, many typical examples have achieved outstanding results, creating jobs for local workers.

The effective implementation of poverty reduction policies has helped improve the lives of ethnic minorities in Dong Hy district. In addition to career guidance, many outstanding poverty reduction models have created a stepping stone, helping to create jobs for local people.

 

According to statistics, Dong Hy district currently has 1,341 poor households (accounting for 5.5%) and 1,084 near-poor households (accounting for 4.45%). In 2024, the locality strives to reduce the multidimensional poverty rate by 2.12%/year, corresponding to a reduction of 387 poor households and 130 near-poor households.

 

Hop Tien commune is one of the typical communes in Dong Hy district that synchronously implements poverty reduction policies. The commune currently has over 1,800 households, more than 8,000 people, of which nearly 70% are Dao ethnic people.

 

sIn 2024, Hop Tien commune will develop a plan to reduce the overall multidimensional poverty rate in the commune from 26.05% to below 13%. The core of the poverty reduction policy in Hop Tien commune is to create livelihoods, aiming to provide fishing rods to help people sustainably reduce poverty.

 

Since 2023, the commune has received tens of billions of Vietnam dong from the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority Areas. Over 4km of inter-hamlet concrete roads have been opened, connecting trade with national and provincial highways.

 

In Van Lang commune, a remote and difficult area of ​​Dong Hy district, with a high proportion of ethnic minorities, in recent years, many practical cooperative models have been developed.

 

Ms. Tran Thi Thai is one of the members of Mong cow cooperative No. 11. Applying the effective model helps significantly improve the quality of life.

 

Ms. Thai said: “My family used to raise cows and buffaloes, but the income was unstable. In 2019, when joining the Mong cow cooperative, my family was in charge of growing grass to supply the cooperative and taking care of the cows.

 

Currently, the family supplies elephant grass to the cooperative for VND8,000/kg. If working enough days, the average monthly income is VND6 million. The amount is enough to cover living expenses.”

 

According to Mr. Ngo Xuan Huy – Vice Chairman of Dong Hy District People’s Committee, in recent years, job training and implementation of national target programs on poverty reduction have always been focused and deployed by the locality. Thanks to the participation of the entire government system, Dong Hy District has achieved many positive results, labor policies have been implemented synchronously, contributing to reducing the unemployment rate.

 

“Many effective economic models have been implemented, especially for rural workers. Organizing job fairs and vocational training is one of the important and meaningful contents to help reduce unemployment and create more jobs for people.

 

Poor and near-poor households enjoy full poverty reduction policies. The most basic issues for poor households such as housing, health insurance cards, support for study costs… have been resolved promptly. Thereby contributing to promoting the economic and social development of the locality,” emphasized the Vice Chairman of Dong Hy District People’s Committee. (Laodong)
