Vietnam recorded an economic loss of nearly VND89.25 trillion ($3.72 billion) due to natural disasters in 2024, up by 17.5 times y/y, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).
In the year, the natural disasters caused 570 deaths or missing persons and injured 2,204 people; while damaging 413,800 hectares of paddy and veggies; 5.4 million heads of poultry and cattle; and 296,800 houses, the GSO said.
Last year, Vietnam logged 4,116 cases of fires and explosions, which claimed the lives of 106 people and injured 115 others, causing an economic loss of VND446.1 billion, up 1% y/y.
Additionally, relevant agencies detected 21,108 environmental violations and addressed 19,327 of them, with total fines of VND315.6 billion, up 11.9% y/y. (GSO)
