Vietnam Seeks JPY30B-JPY50B Annual Green Growth Loan from Japan

Vietnam has requested Japan’s support for a JPY30 billion–JPY50 billion ($190 million-$316.6 million) annual loan to advance green growth initiatives, local media reported.

The proposal was made during a meeting on January 8 between Finance Minister Nguyen Van Thang and his Japanese counterpart Kato Katsunobu.

The proposed loan would focus on climate change response, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. It is expected to mirror the successful JPY50 billion economic recovery loan provided by Japan in 2023, with a focus on concessional terms and streamlined disbursement.

Minister Thang also highlighted Japan’s past contributions to infrastructure projects, including the Nhat Tan Bridge and Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro Line, and called for continued official development assistance (ODA) support in Vietnam’s four development pillars, namely climate change, digital economy, infrastructure, and healthcare.

The meeting also discussed disaster risk management, with Vietnam requesting Japan’s expertise in insurance systems, disaster databases, and public asset protection.

In reply, Minister Kato acknowledged Vietnam’s four development pillars and reaffirmed Japan’s readiness to assist with renewable energy projects, grid transmission development, and disaster response to support Vietnam’s carbon neutrality goals and climate resilience. (TBTCVN)
