Vietnam to Set Up Offshore Seismic Monitoring for Earthquake Risk Assessment

Vietnam’s Institute of Geophysics plans to install offshore seismic monitoring stations to strengthen Vietnam’s earthquake risk assessment program, particularly for critical infrastructure and high-risk zones, said official.

Director of the Institute of Geophysics Nguyen Xuan Anh emphasized that Vietnam has developed an earthquake assessment system approaching international standards.

The Institute currently operates nearly 100 seismic monitoring stations across the country and maritime regions, providing real-time data on earthquakes of M≥1.0. The data supports disaster prevention, social safety, and hydropower project operations.

In 2024, Vietnam recorded 478 earthquakes, ranging from 2.5 to 5.0 in magnitude. Most occurred in Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, linked to reservoir-induced stress on deep fault lines. (Hanoi Online, Vnanet)
