Position: Fisheries Scientist
Location: Ca Mau, Vietnam
Overview: This position is funded by the Monterey Bay Aquarium to support scientific data collection and analysis on the environmental performance of the Black Tiger Shrimp wild capture fishery in Southern Vietnam.
Term: 2 Years, with extension contingent upon funding
Primary Duties
- Work with Ca Mau and other appropriate government bodies to collect data and run analyses on:
- Monthly catch statistics for black the black tiger fishery.
- Collecting data on catch, fishing effort, and length distribution in the catch
- Develop and test research methods needed to effectively measure CPUE, length frequency distribution, and size-specific fecundity of black tiger shrimp
- Track the number of vessels in the fishery and;
- Conduct interviews with the crew on fishing techniques and overlap with endangered, protected or threatened species
- Conduct a study to collect data on size specific fecundity of the target monodon population and determine length at which 50% are mature.
- Develop methods to verify logbook data and quantify catch of associated (bycatch) species that are endangered, threatened, or of concern with a study using on-board observers or spot-checks at sea.
- Carry out an assessment of sources of mortality of bycatch species (ie, the monodon broodstock fishery, other fisheries, non-fishing factors) that are endangered or threatened or of concern to ascertain the contribution of the monodon broodstock fishery to risk.
- Work with the Monterey Bay Aquarium on applying knowledge gained through this work to other black tiger fisheries in Indonesia and other regions.
- Assist with farmed shrimp performance verification assessments as needed Other duties as required
