Vietnam is preparing for the November 24 – December 1 INC-5 session in Busan, South Korea, aiming to secure a strong position in global plastic waste negotiations, local media reported.
At a workshop held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, UNDP, and WWF Vietnam on November 5, discussions centered on Vietnam’s stance toward an informal INC-5 negotiation document, examining which clauses the country might support or seek adjustments for.
In preparation for INC-5, the negotiation committee chair released an informal document for countries on October 30 to consider as a negotiation tool. The workshop addressed key points, including Vietnam’s stance on using this document as a formal negotiation basis at Busan.
Another focus was on predicting how the Convention, once passed, would influence Vietnam’s policies, particularly in plastics, chemicals, waste management, and international cooperation.
UNDP identified key areas for Vietnam’s focus, including ensuring the agreement aligns with national interests and assessing potential impacts. UNDP also recommended securing financial and technical support and preparing for compliance with treaty requirements.
WWF Vietnam added that eliminating harmful plastics and securing sustainable product design should be priorities, along with adequate financial resources and long-term and flexible mechanisms.
At the event, Mr. Hoang Thanh Vinh, an expert on plastic waste and circular economy, underlined that Vietnam’s plastic sector, worth $20 billion, could face challenges under new global controls on hazardous materials.
