The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) values the opportunity to cooperate and support Vietnam in its journey to address climate change, said Marcos Neto, assistant to the secretary-general of the United Nations cum director of the UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub.
The official made the statement while meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) in Azerbaijan.
During the talks, the UNDP official acknowledged Vietnam’s ambitious targets in its updated National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, emphasizing their importance in limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
He said that the UNDP is coordinating with other UN agencies to support Vietnam’s fair energy transition and upcoming NDC updates.
Congratulating Vietnam for its progress in implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), Mr. Marcos Neto noted that the UNDP sought further clarity on Vietnam’s needs and ways to assist in the JETP implementation.
For his part, Deputy Minister Thanh expressed gratitude for UNDP’s assistance in climate change, circular economy, and biodiversity conservation. He outlined Vietnam’s focus on updating its NDC 3.0 and called for further UNDP support in addressing adaptation, loss, and damage.
He also praised UNDP’s biodiversity finance initiatives and sought its continued partnership in establishing legal frameworks for a circular economy and early warning systems for disaster management. (Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong)
