Vietnam, Russia Discuss Offshore Mineral Exploration Project

On December 3, officials of Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MooNRE) met with a Russian delegation in Hanoi to discuss a collaborative offshore mineral exploration project, especially in technical and environmental cooperation, state media reported.

The Russian delegation included representatives from FESCO, VNIIOkeangeologia, and Marion Group. VNIIOkeangeologia’s Director Vitalievich Shumskiy highlighted Russia’s preparations to meet requirements for launching joint research in Vietnam, as well as deploying experts for seabed studies.

He affirmed its commitment to sharing expertise and underlined the importance of environmental considerations in offshore mining, citing the global shift toward sustainability.

Acknowledging Russia’s experience in seabed mining, the Vietnamese officials requested guidance on sustainable exploration methods and environmental management. They also called for support in training personnel to enhance its technical capacity.

Concluding the meeting, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Quy Kien confirmed the approval of the project on geological research, assessment, exploration, exploitation, and processing of minerals and metals in the sea areas of Vietnam during recent Vietnam-Russia intergovernmental talks.

Once launched, it will adhere to Vietnamese regulations and international standards, marking a significant step in bilateral resource cooperation, he said. (Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong)
