On December 5, U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper announced a $12.5-million assistance package for Vietnam, during a meeting with Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien at the Fisheries Surveillance Training Facility in southern Kien Giang province, local media reported.
Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), the package aims to enhance Vietnam’s maritime law enforcement and address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The support includes small boats, training programs, and modern enforcement facilities for agencies like the Department of Fisheries Surveillance (DFIRES), the Ministry of Public Security, and Vietnam Customs.
Deputy Minister Tien expressed gratitude for the U.S. assistance, recognizing its value in strengthening Vietnam’s capacity to protect aquatic resources and enforce anti-IUU fishing measures. He emphasized the significance of these resources in enabling effective fisheries surveillance and maritime law enforcement.
Ambassador Knapper also observed enforcement training scenarios in Phu Quoc, which included participation by women officers. These activities, supported by INL, aim to enhance Vietnam’s law enforcement capabilities and promote gender inclusion in maritime security roles.
