AFD Pledges EUR20M for Vietnam to Respond to Climate Change

The French Development Agency (AFD) has committed to add EUR20 million in loan for Vietnam’s support program to respond to climate change (SP-RCC), the French Embassy to Hanoi said in a statement May 14. Earlier, the Japanese government funded JPY10 billion (EUR85 million) for the program, the embassy noted. The SP-RCC is aimed at promoting the development of a legal framework to foster climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in Vietnam. If sea level rises 1 meter, 5% of Vietnam’s land, 11% of its population and 7% of its agricultural land would be affected with the loss estimated at 10% of GDP. The Vietnamese government approved the National Target Program to Respond to Climate Change (NTP-RCC) in 2008. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and AFD will support the NTP-RCC implementation through their commitment to financing the SP-RCC.
