Hanoi to Spend $43M to Upgrade Classrooms Next Year

Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi will spend VND794 billion ($43 million) to upgrade more than 5,000 unsettled classrooms and build 80 national standard schools in 2010, the An Ninh Thu Do newspaper reported, citing a senior official. The capital nearly doubles 2009’s figure, Nguyen Van Tu, deputy head of the municipal Department of Planning and Investment said. The city plans to upgrade 5,523 makeshift classrooms this year. However, only 58% of the plan has been fulfilled, Tu added. There are 126 training establishments in Hanoi, including 56 universities, 28 junior colleges and 39 technical secondary schools. The city targets to have 50% of state-run preschools meeting nation standards by 2015. Hanoi has planned to assess training quality of all schools in the 2009-2010 academic year.
