Japan Funds $220M for Water Environment Project in Central Vietnam

The Japanese government has decided to fund $220 million for a project to improve water environment in Vietnam’s central city of Hue, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said June 30. The project, via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will focus on building 250km-long mixed culverts and 90 pumping stations, dredging rivers and lakes, as well as building a wastewater treatment plant with capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per day. The project aims to improve the city’s ecological environment and locals’ living conditions. This has been the biggest-ever urban infrastructure development project in the city, the agency added. At the Consultative Group Meeting held in Hanoi last Dec, Japan pledged to provide Vietnam with $1.64 billion in ODA this year.
