Japan to Help Vietnam Preserve Old Quarter in Hanoi

The Japanese University of Tokyo, Chiba University and Showa Women’s University will join a conference on restoration of the ancient quarter in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi Mar 27, state media reported Mar. 26.  The conference will focus on preserving downgraded houses in Hang Buom, Hang Giay, Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen streets, the online Tuoitre newspaper reported Friday.  Doctor Utsumi Sawako from Showa Women’s University will propose a case study of the rebuilding which was made between 2003 and 2009.  Prof. Fukukawa Yuchi of Chiba University will mention current situation and ways of preserving 36 ancient streets, meanwhile, Doctor Ota Shoichi from University of Tokyo will contribute reconstitution of streetscape in the quarter. Local and foreign experts have proposed about 30 projects on preservation of the ancient quarter.
