Quang Nam Province Oks $104.97M Project to Clear Bombs, Mines

Authorities Vietnam’s central province of Quang Nam July 1 approved a VND2 trillion ($104.97 million) project to clear wartime bombs and mines. The sum, coming from the state budget and foreign organizations, will be implemented on 54,160 hectares in 18 districts and towns, the Lao Dong newspaper reported Jul 2. The project is aimed to reduce the number of unexploded ordnances (UXO)-caused accidents in the province. Such accidents have killed 437 people and left 489 others injured in central Vietnam between 2004 and 2008. Vietnam needs more than $10 billion to clear up bombs and mines in next 300 years, said a representative of the Technology Center for Bomb and Mine Disposal (BOMICEN).
