Vietnam City Hosts Conference on Climate Change

Authorities of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho held the 3rd conference to discuss measures to address climate change issues on May 18, the Tai Nguyen & Moi Truong newspaper reported. The event attracted officials from the World Bank (WB) and the British non-governmental organization Challenge to Change.  At the event, the participants discussed 10 action plans to response to climate change impacts, including infrastructure development, environment and natural resource protection, poverty reduction, energy saving, aquaculture, resettlement and ensuring preventive health services. Since late 2008, the city has cooperated with many international organizations, including Rockefeller Fund, ISET Organization and Challenge to Challenge to carry out climate change projects.  Vietnam is listed among the world’s five hardest-hit climate change countries. If sea level rises one meter, 5% of Vietnam’s land, 11% of its population and 7% of its agricultural land would be affected with the loss estimated at 10% of GDP.
