Vietnam Hanoi Hosts Int’l Conference on Emission Reduction

An international conference on reduced emissions from deforestation degradation (REDD) opened in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi on Nov. 11. Taking part in the event were Vietnamese officials and representatives from nine developing countries the UN has chosen to implement the REDD program, the Kinh Te Viet Nam Online reported Thursday. Vietnam needs to have new mechanisms, financial sources and techniques to encourage people to take part in the sustainable forest use and management, said First Secretary of the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam, Thea Martine Ottmann. Norway, an experienced nation on managing forest, pledged to help Vietnam implement the REDD program effectively, added Ottmann. In Vietnam, the program will be piloted in Lam Dong province at a cost of $4.4 million funded by the Norwegian government.
