Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

As an Assistant Scientist, this role will involve support for research projects focused on scaling of rice climate change initiatives in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The goal is to improve the access to, and therefore impact of, existing and newly developed technologies for greenhouse gas mitigation. It is expected that the role will, under the minimal supervision of Scientist, facilitate the planning, designing, and implementation of all the experiments. This will include, but is not limited to, the tasks of: gathering data, completing literature reviews, note taking, summarizing research findings, report writing, supporting the development of research studies and event or presentation development.  Constantly communicate with internal and external project partners and collaborators to exchange conceptual ideas and to effectively gather feedback and research-related requirements for the advancement of the project. Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered and contribute to manuscript for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences. Supervise, coach and guide scholars, OJTs, researchers and research technicians. Coordinate and prepare training sessions for a variety of people.

This position will be based in Hanoi, Vietnam and may only be filled by permanent citizens of Vietnam.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the planning, designing and implementation of all the experiments, including but not limited to data gathering, preparing interview questions/surveys, conducting surveys and data entry and analysis
  • Performing literature reviews, analysis of secondary data and synthesizing research  
  • Contribute to the development of research proposals including review of related literature, selection of adequate research tools and equipment, verification of suggested methodologies and establishment of parameters
  • Constantly communicate with internal and external project partners and collaborators to exchange conceptual ideas and to effectively gather feedback and research-related requirements for the advancement of the project 
  • Provide assistance and guidelines to internal and external stakeholders considering the implementation of experiments, including logistics
  • Constantly monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations to improve research activities/tasks performed by Research technicians and Researchers in order to maintain smooth conduct as well as to foster a productive working environment
  • Coordinate with required IRRI services and supplies to ensure smooth implementation of experiments
  • Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered from the project trials
  • Evaluate, validate and contribute to the interpretation of results contribute to the writing of manuscripts for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences
  • Prepare and submit updated of research outputs to the Scientist in a timely manner
  • Write reports, contribute to scientific paper writing, posters, publications and presentations at the local and international
  • Supervise and lead the maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
  • Administer effective coordination and preparations of trainings by ensuring that the training materials, logistical arrangements and resource persons are appropriate to the defined objectives

Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in agricultural or environment economics, rural development, agriculture science, or relevant field.
  • Minimum 1 years (if MSc) or 4 years (if BSc) of experience in data analysis, data management or equivalent.

Mandatory

  • Good English writing and communication skills including report writing and presentation skills
  • Qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively and respectfully and inclusively in a diverse, multicultural, multidisciplinary work environment

Preferred

  • Sectoral experience within agriculture
  • Analytical modelling expertise
  • Demonstrated capacity to publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals
