CTCN - UNIDO project: Bio-waste minimization and valorisation for low carbon production in the rice sector - Vietnam

SNV Netherlands Development Organization has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor through agriculture, energy and water, sanitation & hygiene.

SNV was selected by UNIDO and the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) to provide technical assistance to MoNRE on rice husk valorisation optimization. The overall aim of the TA is to improve the economic performance of rice mills but also reduce its carbon footprint by: a) substituting the use of (imported) fossil fuels (coal) and b) displacing the GHG emissions which are generated under the current disposal practices of unutilized rice husks.

The main activities to be covered include the development of business models, a bankable business plan and access to finance options for selected rice mills in the Mekong delta region.

As part of this assignment SNV is looking for a business specialist. The specialist is preferably based in the Ho Chi Minh City Office of SNV.

Responsibilities

• Assess in close cooperating with project team viable business models for the rice husk valorization/utilization technologies in the rice sector
• Provide input to the business models and lead activities related to finance and financial evaluation of proposed business models and a business plan
• Lead identification of financing options for the business models, including domestic, international, bilateral and multilateral financing options with focus on climate financing options that are accessible through MoNRE
• Provide advisory services on business development, value chain, market linkages to the rice mills on the valorisation of rice husk.
• Monthly of bi-monthly travel to Hanoi or HCMC depending on the duty station of the specialist.

The candidate ideally has the following profile

• Master degree or higher in Economics, Business, Finance or a technical degree supplemented with considerable experience in finance and economy
• At least 5 years’ experience in a role related to business management and development
• Good experience working with private sector in a business-related environment
• Experience with the development of business models and access to finance
• Excellent English and Vietnamese communication skills, both in writing and speaking
• Ideally has experience with agriculture, climate finance, Renewable energy, and the construction industry
• Flexible, motivated and committed to improving rural livelihoods
• Able to travel for a period of 1 or 2 weeks to rural areas

Outputs

• Reporting on the financial analysis, value proposition, market structure, value chain and regulatory environment of 2-3 business models
• Reporting on the funding request, financial analysis, value proposition, SWOT analysis, operations, market structure, value chain, marketing plan, regulatory environment of a business plan for a selected company in the Mekong Delta Region.
• Report on financing opportunities – detailed overview of financing options in Viet Nam for the business models including multilateral, PPP, impact investment, climate finance and grants.

Duration: The expected input required spans 3 months in the period of March 2017 to June 2017.
