Handicap International is active in Viet Nam since 1992. Consultancy in behavior change communication

I.Background

1.General project information

Safe Roads For Youth (SR4Y) is a 3-year research-action project in 3 countries (Argentina, Republic of South Africa, Vietnam). It aims at better understanding the impact, among 15-25 years-old youth, of cultural norms on the effectiveness of Road Safety activities and, notably Drink-Driving prevention.

In Vietnam, SR4Y is set up in 02 provinces, Bac Giang and Binh Thuan. Each provincial site sets up a local promoting group (LPG) including representatives of different departments of the province, who will support core groups to make action plan and then validate them to ensure good action plan. At local site level, a core group is set up to make plan, organize and evaluate communication activity on Drink Driving.

Project use participation methodology, meaning that sharing power in making decisions. It reflects a sense of self-determination, self-regulation, ownership and empowerment in relation to safety matters.

2.Specific to this activity:

Each core group has to design their own communication campaign and implement it. LPG and Core group members come from governmental organization, specializing on administrating, managing or some people focusing on teaching. Now they are asked to work with young people to initiate communication campaign. It is such a challenge for them. Hence, needs to build up capacity for them on behavior change communication is crucial.

II.Training objectives

After the training, all participants can

- Explain definitions of  communication, Behavior Change Communication, steps to change a behavior
- Use tools to analyze target group of 15  - 25 years old
- Can design an effective communication strategy and materials for Drink driving subject on target group of 15 – 25 years old at their own site.

28 people (LPG members + leader of core groups)

- Duration: 3 days
- Time: 12 – 14/07/2013

V.Methodology

With a view to ensure participants ownership/commitment, the approach will combine “active learning” (i.e. learner-centered training approach, case studies, group discussion, brain storming, individual & group exercises, role play, etc.) & participation.

VI. Expected results

1. Short term expected results

After training, participants can:
- Explain some definitions of communication, behavior change communication, steps to change behaviors, factors influencing behaviors.
- Analyze characteristics of target group
- Choose effective approach to target group
- Organize some direct, effective activities to target group: consulting, group discussion, events, contest
- Analyze and practice procedure to have a communication session
- Analyze  and practice procedure to develop communication materials
- Make a communication strategy to change behavior of target group of 15 – 25 years old
2. Long term long term expected results

- Participants can organize effect behavior change communication activities focusing on Drink Driving.
- Participants can produce effective, attractive communication materials.
- Participants can stimulate changes in behaviors of target group

Responsibilities

-Prepare training materials, conduct training and produce training report at the end of the course

Supervision:

The Consultant will be supervised/monitored by the Project Coordinator of the project
