Stock-taking of business engagement initiatives on environment protection in Viet Nam

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – the world largest environmental network- is a membership union composed of both government and civil society organisations. It harnesses the experience, resources, and reach of its more than 1,300 member organisations and the input of more than 13,000 experts. IUCN is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.

Background

Businesses are playing critical role in determining how biodiversity is used and conserved, and improving environmental performance has clear benefits to businesses. These include a reduced carbon footprint, efficient energy consumption, reusing and recycling materials, preservation, and the use of equitable natural resources recognizing their values.

Both business and development organizations have many common long-term goals: interest in a stable society, income generation, building capacity of local entrepreneurs, improving people’s health and education. The motivation for collaboration may differ and partnerships can arise in the context of a company’s CSR activities or as a part of core business operations.

To promote strong engagement of the corporate sector in biodiversity and environmental conservation, platforms where companies can be inspired, guided, and supported in incorporating environmental values into their businesses are crucial.

In Dec 2018, IUCN Viet Nam initiated Viet Nam Business for Environment (VE4B) with an aim to engaging businesses in environmental and biodiversity conservation in Viet Nam. The platform, with effective functions, can promote business responsibility in creating a sustainable, green economy with fewer negative impacts on biodiversity.

IUCN Viet Nam is looking for a consultant who will conduct a stock-taking analysis of business engagement initiatives on environment protection in Viet Nam to support VB4E’s strategic development. This analysis will identify priorities, target business groups for VB4E collaboration and business approaches.

This activity is a part of the USAID-funded- Ha Long-Cat Ba Alliance and implemented by IUCN. Established in 2014, the Alliance is set up to build a partnership between government, businesses, and communities to catalyze action that preserves and protects Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago.
