The project of "contribution to close-to-nature, private forest management and support to the FLEGT/VPA negotiation process in Vietnam" is to contribute economically, socilly and ecologically to sustainable management of private-owned plantations in Vietnam. The project also provides suitable instruments for the implementation of a national „Timber Legality Assurance Systems“ (TLAS) and the results are incorporated into the national policy dialogue.

The project consists of two components: Component 1 aims at establishing a demand-driven, inter-provincial Forest Owner Association to advise private user groups in an economically profitable and sustainable forest management under international certification standards; Component 2 aims at building a robust monitoring system for wood identification, legality control and quantification of wood imports from Laos, Cambodia (and Myanmar) to Vietnam.
The project is implemented in three pilot provinces, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam.

For the long term, silvicultural measures are applied, the harvesting cycle of plantations are extended for about 10 years to produce high-quality timber. While applying silvicultural measures, enrichment with native trees and natural regeneration processes should be applied an integral part of the long-term oriented forestry transforming into sustainable mixed forests.

The Project is currently looking to hire high qualified experts for short-term consultancy service on:

  1. Conducting Training of Trainers (ToT) in (i) reduced impact logging (RIL) and labor safety (“from planning to execution”), and (ii) silvicultural treatments of plantations which are foreseen for extended rotation periods and for the production of sawn timber
  2. Study of the Potentials and Recommendations for the Marketing of Timber Produced under Extended Rotation Cycles by Forest Owners’ Associations of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Nam, Including Local, National and International Markets and Customers

Working location: Mainly base in Thua Thien Hue province with requirement to travel to Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces when needed.
