Consultant/Group of Consultants for Assessment of Fire Wood and Cook Stove Use

The Government of Vietnam has received assistance from the United States Agency for International Development for the Vietnam Forests and Deltas Project. The Project aims to help accelerate Vietnam’s transition to climate-resilient, low-emission sustainable development in selected provinces and urban areas. The principal executing agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), has designated the Management Board for Forestry Projects (MBFP) to manage project implementation.  A partnership of organizations including SNV Vietnam, American Red Cross and Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), led by Winrock International, are responsible for coordinating technical assistance to enhance planning practices for resilient communities in respect of short- and long-term climate risk as well as to promote climate-smart planning for low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The specific tasks of this work to be conducted in two provinces Thanh Hoa and Nghe An are:

  • to assess current situation and future trends of firewood for household cooking use, including sources, types, collection distances and consumption amount;
  • to understand perception of local people on current practice of cook stove usage (current cooking behavior, types of stove and cooking purposes)
  • to consult their acceptance on new stoves which are cleaner and more efficient
  • to identify and analyze key local stakeholders driving this process (i.e. industrial processing factories which consumes firewood to generate steam/heat for production, and which uses firewood as material such as paper mills, charcoal kilns, wood chippers...)
  • to define the sources, types, collection and consumption for commercial and industrial uses such as pulp-paper mills, charcoal kilns, firewood  firedboilers/furnaces, wood chipper, MDF…
  • to assess the impact of commercial firewood collection and use
