BACKGROUND

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. It actively monitors and investigates wildlife trade and provides information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC monitors wildlife trade at international, regional and national levels – researching both domestic and international chains of supply and demand to identify interventions to increase the efficiency of management. TRAFFIC works closely with consumer groups, CSOs and governments, providing critical information on the impacts of trade, motivating efforts to increase the ecological sustainability of trade in wild species, and helping to improve enforcement of international wildlife trade controls. TRAFFIC provides information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes.

TRAFFIC works to change the behaviour of the Asian community reduce wildlife crime and wildlife consumption through its evidence based demand reduction framework. The social marketing techniques surrounding this framework are aimed at changing the behaviours of the current and future targeted audiences focussed on threatened species consumption (such as tiger and rhino horn). It is important to evaluate the impact of the efforts through consumer surveys and other research.

In Southeast Asia TRAFFIC’s regional office based in Malaysia where it is legally established as a programme of WWF-Malaysia. The TRAFFIC Southeast Asia Programme was established in 1991 and continues to work with partners to address key wildlife trade issues in the region, with the Viet Nam office focussing its efforts in Viet Nam. The TRAFFIC office in Viet Nam comes under the umbrella of the Southeast Asian regional efforts. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

JOB DESCRIPTION

The main function of this position is coordinate, implement and analyse surveys to establish baseline of consumers’ motivations and preferences and do ongoing surveys for illicit wildlife products, with an initial focus on tiger products but also turtles and other species in Viet Nam.

Major Activities

The consumer research officer is expected to facilitate consumer surveys for tiger and other species in the urban settings in Viet Nam. This role will assist with the development of consumer surveys, translation to Vietnamese and implementation of these surveys in the urban centers in Viet Nam. He/She may need to train interviewers on interview techniques and data entry and will supervise the quality of data collection. This person will also enter data collected and do initial/preliminary analysis of the data and report writing. This role plays a key role in ensuring that the consumer research is rigorous and objective. This role will be working closely with the social scientists of San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG), the TRAFFIC’s consumer behaviour change coordinator (SBCC), the TRAFFIC’s Data Analysis and Research Officer, the Head of Office in Viet Nam and other relevant staff in Viet Nam, Southeast Asia and globally. The Consumer Research Officer will also liaise with other NGOs on data collection and availability of data of earlier research.

The main tasks of consumer research officer, include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop a plan/protocol and budget for consumer survey on tigers and other species in consultation with Senior Programme Officer and Head of Office.
  • Facilitating the development of consumer questionnaires with SDZG, the SBCC and others
  • Plan / schedule survey/interviews where needed train interviewers
  • Implement the consumer survey(s) for tigers and TM practitioners in urban centers in Viet Nam
  • Enter data in excel (for transport into statistical analysis software)
  • Undertake preliminary analysis of the data
  • Regularly reports on progress of surveys to the senior programme officer and the Head of Office
  • Draft report of consumer surveys data
  • Undertakes other tasks relevant to the project as assigned.

Major Outputs/Key Performance Indicators

  • Consumer survey development and implementation in close liaison with SDZG’s and TRAFFIC’s experts.
  • Draft report on tiger consumer survey results
  • Draft report on TM practitioner survey results

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least two years of solid work experience in marketing or market research (quantitative/qualitative)
  • Enthusiastic for data management and uncovering insight of motivations and preference of consumers of illicit wildlife
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social marketing, social sciences or sociology from a reputable University in Vietnam or abroad.
  • Excellent analysis and report writing skills.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Be able to perform under pressure, maintain deadline and more importantly work well in a team.
  • Native Vietnamese speaker with advanced level of English both oral and written.
  • Strong computer skills in using Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and SPSS a plus.
  • An interest in and commitment to conservation and combatting wildlife trade.
  • Able to travel to urban centers within Viet Nam.
