Deputy Director

FHI 360 is an international non-governmental organization that works with the Vietnam Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development and other ministries, provincial health services, and local non-government organizations to promote the health and well-being of the Vietnamese population, particularly vulnerable and disenfranchised groups. In Vietnam, FHI 360 is currently building the capacity of local organizations in HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; drug treatment policies and practices; clinical research for the development of vaccines and drugs; non-communicable disease prevention; laboratory strengthening; and social and behavior change communication approaches to preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases.

We are seeking qualified, experienced and highly motivated Vietnamese national to join FHI 360 for the position of Deputy Director, Country Office Programs Alive & Thrive/Vietnam, Hanoi based. *To obtain the full job description, please send a request to [email protected].

Project Summary: Alive & Thrive (A&T) is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A&T is dedicated to reducing death, illness, and malnutrition caused by
sub-optimal infant and young child feeding. During its first phase (2008-2014) the initiative has aimed to increase rates of exclusive breastfeeding and improve
complementary feeding practices in three countries – namely Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Viet Nam. During its next phase (2013-2017) the initiative will translate
lessons to other countries and regions

Position Summary:

The Deputy Country Director/Vietnam will provide technical leadership, management, and coordination for the Alive & Thrive project activities in Viet Nam. S/he
will manage a team of technical and support staff to ensure quality technical programming, manage administrative support services, and timely monitoring of
reports and contracts related to the project. The position will report the Director, Country Office Programs, Alive & Thrive, Viet Nam

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Director, Country Office Programs to provide oversight to the technical and implementation teams to ensure high quality of program implementation and transition to government partners
  • Work with the A&T team to recruit and supervise short-term technical assistance as needed
  • Supervise the work of the local technical and administrative staff
  • Report regularly to the Director, Country Office Programs on technical and administrative issues
  • Assist with analysis and presentation of program results – both oral and written
  • Oversee the development of high quality annual work plans reports, and other project deliverables
  • Work closely with the HQ team to develop and monitor program budgets
  • Oversee all local contracting activities
  • Troubleshoot to prevent and resolve potential problems

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and abilities:

  • Masters in one of the following or related fields: Nutrition and/or Public Health, Medicine and or equivalent years of experience
  • 7-8 year(s) of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, to assess priorities and competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently.
  • Ability to initiate and implement activities with minimal oversight and supervision.

Specific Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Knowledge of infant and young child feeding or maternal and child nutrition and health
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and manage teams
  • Experience in working with government counterparts and international agencies
  • Excellent writing and presentations skills in English. Knowledge of Vietnamese a plus
  • Working knowledge of social franchising a plus
  • Prior work experience in Viet Nam or the South East Asia region a plus
  • Excellent computer and communication skills
