Fallow Programmer

World Agroforestry Centre – Vietnam Office offers a short-term contract for a programmer in modelling landuse change under the Smart-Tree-Invest project.

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is one of a network of the Global Research Partnership for a Food-secure Future (CGIAR). As a global leader in agroforestry research and development, ICRAF’s ultimate purpose is to improve human welfare by reducing poverty, increasing cash income, improving food and nutritional security, and increasing environmental resilience through improved agroforestry systems. ICRAF has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and works in 21 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The Position

Under the direct supervision of a project manager/researcher, the successful candidate will be responsible for converting the PC-Raster version of FALLOW (Forest, Agroforest, Low-value Lands Or Waste) model into Phyton language and design a user-friendly interface for a wide application of the model. The position will be based in ICRAF office in Hanoi. Her/his main duties and responsibilities as follows.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn and understand the concept of landuse change modelling in FALLOW model
  • Convert the PC-Raster based FALLOW model into Phyton language and design its user interface as friendly as possible
  • Document all programming effort to become a model manual
  • Testing the model application based on existing data in some study sites and improve the model performance if necessary
  • Giving a presentation about the new model to all Icraf colleagues, in the end of the contract

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Bachelor degree in Information Technique (IT)/Computer Science that has experience in modelling with Phyton/Java language
  • Good communication and writing in English
  • Be an open-minded and dynamic person and dedicated to works and to the Center's goals
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in multicultural teams
  • Able to generate creative, practical approaches to overcome challenging situations

Terms of offer

  • This is 8-month short-term contract with a competitive salary
  • The contract is subject to 2 (two) months probation period, assessment of performance and availability of resources
