I. Background

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification has typically focused on the certification of timber products sourced from sustainably managed forests as determined by a set of principles and criteria. Under the Forest Certification for Ecosystem Services (ForCES) project, the idea of expanding FSC to include additional ecosystem services (such as carbon, water, biodiversity and others) will be tested across 4 countries; Vietnam, Chile, Indonesia and Nepal.

SNV Vietnam will implement activities under the ForCES project Quang Tri Province, and Ha Tinh Province.

ForCES start with some activities like marketing analysis for Ecosystem services and mapping working. The national consultants have been recruited to design the tools and methods to identify the suite of ecosystem services (ES) available within the pilot sites. Identifying the distribution of different ES will be important in terms of determining which ES to target under the project activities, and will be used in association with an analysis of the market demand for different ES to determine which ES will be targeted for developing a business model for each pilot Province.

Support of a field teams in each province is needed to carry out the grouth-truthing activities.

II. Objective

Provide support and coordinate closely with the consultant teams to carry out the activities in the field and as informant for existing and available secondary site level data on the key ecosystem services including carbon, biodiversity, watershed areas and other measurable ES in the two pilot areas.

III. Tasks

- Provide available source data at site level (maps, biodiversity, forest management plan collect data layers which are related to forest cover in Quang Tri and Ha Tinh, forest biomass carbon stocks, biodiversity conservation value and forest management status).  Coordinate with the consultants in carrying out the field survey if needed.

- Link with the local counter partners to carry out the marketing survey and gather the additional information from the field for all the activities.

- Provide logistic and organisation support to the national consultants to organise the meetings and survey in the field.

- Input to create functioning map(s) of Quang Tri and Ha Tinh’s other forest ES including biodiversity (highlighting conservation value and conservation management status - protected areas..) and watershed boundaries with the scale of 1/25 K.

IV. Timeframe

Maximum 15 person-days per site within 2 months (based on actual timesheet); to complete all tasks before 30th September 2012

V. Requirements

Support team should have experience in GIS mapping and have good assess in the data at site level on forestry, biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services. Have good relationship with local counter-partners and. Working in Quang Tri and Ha Tinh is prefered.
