Fund Manager; Inclusive Business Investment Officer

SNV Vietnam is looking for 01 Fund Manager and 01 Inclusive Business Investment Officer (For Vietnam Business Challenge Fund), based in Hanoi with frequent travel (Employment contract)

SNV Netherlands Development Organisation has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor in agriculture, energy, water & sanitation, and REDD+.

SNV as a result of an international competitive commercial tender has been selected by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) as the Fund Manager to run the Vietnam Business Challenge Fund (VBCF) from September 2012 until the end of 2015.  The overall purpose of VBCF is to support the private sector in Vietnam to develop innovative Inclusive Business models that deliver both commercial benefits for the private sector and developmental benefits for poor people, in terms of job creation, income improvements and availability of more affordable goods and services.

VBCF will provide business mentoring support and award non-reimbursable funding of selected proposal budgets to companies operating in Vietnam through competitive calls for relevant business proposals that will handle the market challenges innovatively, benefit the poor and be commercially sustainable and replicable in the long run. Funding is available for up to USD 800,000 per project for proposals in three sectors – agriculture, low-carbon growth and infrastructure and basic services.

We are seeking dynamic and highly motivated national candidates to fill in two positions as part of the VBCF team. 

1. Fund Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of target sectors in Vietnam, provide market intelligence; carry out market research to determine the level of activity, attractiveness and returns of IB funds, define future trends.
  • Develop strong business networks and help develop a pipeline of potential investments.
  • Undertake due diligence of potential investments; participate in structuring, negotiating and execution of deals.
  • Prepare investment review materials and presentations to investment committees to obtain investment approval.
  • Management of the investment portfolio.
  • Provide business mentoring to the investee companies.
  • Prepare analytical frameworks for monitoring and evaluation activities measuring financial and social impact.
  • Track and monitor compliance of portfolio companies, prepare supervision reports against relevant benchmarks and propose courses of action in the event of non-compliance.
  • Analyze corporate financial data and other industry information to identify and monitor issues that may affect investments and recommend actions where necessary.
  • Communicate the investment strategy and its rationale for engaging in specific transactions to stakeholders.
  • Develop knowledge material and case studies
  • Promote and facilitate scale up of investee companies with potential impact/commercial investors for scale up

Requirements:

  • Vietnamese citizen.
  • Master degree of Business Administration or equivalent qualification.
  • 7 years of relevant working experience, preferably in a private equity firm.
  • Knowledge of the private equity market in emerging markets, impact investing and as well as the critical success factors for investing in private equity funds.
  • Experience with agricultural, energy and basic services investments that involve low income people.
  • Understanding of poverty and social impact.
  • High professional integrity and sound business judgment in identifying potential business partners.
  • Ability to think independently, analyze problems, and identify solutions.
  • High degree of initiative, flexibility, reliability, discretion and willingness to learn.
  • Good understanding of field realities; ability to link different professional spheres: business, government, development and funding agencies.
  • Good network with local government organizations.
  • Cross cultural skills and management experience of multiple complex tasks.
  • Strong facilitation skills and excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Excellent spoken and written Vietnamese and English.
  • Good computer skills in MS-applications (Word, Excel, Internet, Email).

2. Inclusive Business Investment Officer

Responsibilities

  • Support the VBCF Executive Manager in the development of the VBCF procedures, framework, strategies and tools
  • Support in the set-up and implementation of each round of call for proposals, including specific responsibilities to be assigned by the VBCF Executive Manager on marketing, applications processing, due diligence, selection, applicant support, guidance and coaching, amongst others
  • Provide business mentoring, facilitation and strategic technical assistance for the grantees in accordance to the relevant sectors and business model type, including: advice and technical assistance for the inclusion of the low income people into the business model
  • Manage a number of grantees, including: coordination, monitoring performance of grantees and alerting any unsatisfactory performance, milestone checking
  • Revise, analyze (including field verifications) and process reimbursement request from companies. Advise the financial division and the VBCF Executive Manager on the compliance of VBCF standards and requirements
  • Coordinate with the VBCF’s Program Administrator and the reimbursement/disbursement processes
  • Support in scaling up strategies on Inclusive Business and Challenge Fund initiatives
  • Analyze corporate financial data and other industry information to identify and monitor issues that may affect investments and recommend actions where necessary
  • Contribute to knowledge management/learning by preparing data, lessons learnt good practices and statistical, qualitative, and anecdotal evidence collected by the VBCF Team
  • Write cases on selective inclusive business (IB) projects for sharing to various stakeholders
  • Disseminate the IB models/ideas to different stakeholders aiming for a systematic change in the emerging market
  • Communicate the investment strategy and its rationale for engaging stakeholders

Candidate profile

  • MBA or equivalent qualification
  • 7 years of relevant working experience, preferably in the development sector, business development services, consulting firms in the agriculture sector or investment funds
  • Experience with agricultural investments that involve small farmers supply chains
  • Experience with green projects and infrastructure/basic services that involve the low income consumers
  • Experience or solid understanding in monitoring and evaluation in development and private sector projects
  • Understanding of poverty and social impact
  • Ability to think independently, analyze problems, and identify solutions;
  • High degree of initiative, flexibility, reliability, discretion and willingness to learn
  • Good understanding of field realities; ability to link different professional spheres: business, government, and civil society
  • Cross cultural skills and management experience of multiple complex tasks
  • Strong facilitation skills and good problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Excellent spoken and written Vietnamese and English
  • Good computer skills in MS-applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, Etc.)
