Individual/Group National Consultant on Agroforestry Model for Sustainable Landscape Management

Netherland Development Organization is seeking for an Individual/Group national consultant on Agroforestry Model for Sustainable Landscape Management in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An

The assignment is to analyse agroforestry options, potential and opportunities with respect to upland communities in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces through undertaking the following tasks:

  • To undertake a comprehensive literature and field review of agroforestry models and their role in socio-economic development, market of products, livelihoods, climate change impacts in upland communities, food security, soil erosion, water services, and carbon sequestration;
  • To identify and propose improved agroforestry systems which can be tested or upscale in the area;
  • To undertake an assessment of ecosystem services protection and enhancement, and climate change adaptation and mitigation potential from different systems;
  • To provide estimates of above ground carbon and soil carbon, soil loss and erosion prevention, water retention abilities and other co-benefits of proposed agroforestry systems
  • To propose a potential monitoring system for monitoring changes in soil loss, soil organic carbon, water retention, community attitude and behaviour for piloted agroforestry models;
  • To undertake capacity building in agroforestry systems development and opportunities for extension workers;
  • Provide specific and detailed recommendations on the most effective and  reliable forest, land management and livelihoods improvement options in term of practical solutions to improve current livelihood and alternative livelihoods activities;
  • The proposed agroforestry systems and income opportunities should be mainstreamed gender analysis to examine the suitability and meet the needs of men/ women or any impact on the social-economic position of men/women
  • An assessment of causes of success and failure for previous introduction of agroforestry models in the project areas, especially related to cultural issues regards swidden agriculture and difficulties of transforming behaviour change;
  • Review of cost – benefits, income opportunities of models;
  • Identify models for further value chain exploration which have potential to increase livelihood and enhance local capacity;
  • Identify local capacity building gap and needs; proposing capacity building activities for more climate-adaptive livelihoods with an emphasis on forest and agriculture.
