SNV Vietnam is looking for a International Expert: Environmental Economics (Climate Change, Agriculture and Forestry)

Based in Hanoi, Vietnam with frequent travel (International associate consultancy contract)

SNV has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor in agriculture, energy, water & sanitation, and REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).

SNV is introducing a number of projects across Africa and Asia. The projects we work on include supporting the protection of forests by providing incentives for communities to manage these resources; as well as piloting and introducing REDD+ compatible solutions in those sectors driving deforestation and forest degradation, namely the Agriculture and Renewable Energy sectors.

SNV is seeking an international expert to assist with advancing our knowledge on the interface of these sectors and supporting activities to promote low emissions, climate resilient development. The expert will be required to provide technical support to a number of on-going SNV projects, including the REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Program, the Multiple Benefits REDD+ Project as well as our work on Climate Smart Agriculture.

Responsibilities

The Advisor will provide support and technical backstopping to a number of SNV projects working in climate change resilient and low emission development activities including the BMU funded MBREDD and ENRICH projects, USAID funded LEAF and Vietnam Forest and Deltas program, tasks will include:

  • To provide technical analysis on cost – benefits and economic analysis of incentives for forest protection, greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies and agricultural production,
  • To provide economic analysis of cost-benefits and market based approaches in the field of climate smart agriculture, renewable energy and climate finance;
  • To provide economic support in calculating opportunity, implementation and transaction costs associated with provincial low emission planning;
  • To provide support to development of private sector links, market based approaches for improving commodity supply chains linked to low emission development, eg. reduced emissions from rice sector, bamboo market chains, and certified agricultural supply chains.

Job requirements

  • Master degree in Environmental Economics, forestry, or natural resources management / agriculture related subjects plus a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
  • Experience in provision of advice on economic analysis to agricultural, forest, or private sector is necessary
  • Experience with provision of support to projects working on low emission development, green growth, REDD, climate change finance is an advantage
  • Strong advisory skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English (spoken & written)
  • Experience working in Vietnam

Contract Duration: one-year associate consultancy contract with a possibility of extension.

Desired start date: As soon as possible, ideally 1st of April, 2014.
