Working in Vietnam since the early 1980s, PATH established a permanent office in Hanoi in 1997, and an office in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014.

With funding from Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, PATH is working with its partners to conduct a project for sustaining Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination programs in Laos and Cambodia with aim to reduce mortality and morbidity of children due to JE disease by making JE vaccination programs in these two countries more effective and sustainable. In Laos, PATH will help improve JE and other immunization coverages to protect children from JE and other vaccine preventable diseases. In the first phase of the project, PATH will pilot intervention packages in 3 selected provinces and then will expand the piloted intervention in phase 2 to other Lao provinces, and probably to Cambodia.

PATH is currently recruiting for a local intern based at PATH office in Hanoi to design education and communication (IEC) messages, and e-learning modules in cartoon and/or animated cartoon clips. The intern will work under the management of PATH’s Asia Regional Technical Advisor.

Project overview: 

This project will emphasize on strengthening capacity of service providers, including program managers, and health workers in routine immunization delivery; and create demand for immunization for community and parents of eligible children. Activities for strengthening capacity for service providers in immunization will include training via e-learning with a series of multimedia learning modules. Creating demand for the JE and other vaccines under national immunization program for community and parents of eligible children will be done using innovative methods such as broadcasting information, education and communication (IEC) messages and immunization quiz in video clips of cartoon, animated cartoon or equivalent to be sent via existing popular communication tools such as WhatsApp or a similar applicable social app.

Description of the project the Intern will complete:

  • The intern will work with the project’s software/program developer, technical adviser/officer to convert written technical content of immunization IEC messages, and training modules into multimedia format for web-based use.
  • Participate in the evaluation of pilot models in community education and e-learning for health workers
  • Once messages/training materials are piloted and evaluated, the intern will support the team in refining these materials.

Description of overall learning objectives and goals for the internship/benefit to the Intern:

The intern will have an opportunity to apply academic coursework through design and implementation, receive mentorship, and familiarize themselves with an international, multidisciplinary working environment. Additionally, the intern will learn:

  • how to educate parents/community by translating technical knowledge into easy-to-learn multimedia messages using animated cartoon
  • how to translate technical documents into e-learning modules
  • how to evaluate education programs for both parents/community and health workers
  • how to apply different animation techniques

Brief description of required skills/experience the intern should possess:

  • Enrolled student or recent graduate with a bachelor of graphic design, communications/marketing or equivalent;
  • Able to use available software for graphic design, able to make cartoon and/or animated cartoon clips from technical content
  • Fluent in English. Fluency in Lao and/or Vietnamese language is an advantage.

Skills to be developed and/or expanded during internship:

The intern will be able to develop skills for working in an international environment, within a multidisciplinary professional team.

Proposed activities:

  • Create cartoon and/or animated cartoon characters and produce clips with conversational subtitle and voice
  • Design cartoon and/or animated cartoon clips for e-learning modules based on technical contents developed by technical team
  • Participate in field testing
  • Participate in field evaluation of these products
  • Refine the cartoon and/or animated cartoon clips for IEC messages and e-learning modules based on the results of evaluation.
