I.            Background

Inclusive business is a strategic, innovative, commercially- viable business initiative, which unlocks entrepreneurial opportunities for low-income markets to engage in the value chain. Inclusive business creates shared value for the businesses, low-income markets and the environment.

the first one-stop shop in Vietnam for various services needed by businesses which include low-income groups in their operations. We use innovative acceleration models to make the businesses investor-ready. Our scope of services, including Market Intelligence & Opportunity Identification, Business Design & Readiness, Investor – Investee Match making, Impact Measurements & Scalability.

IBA now needs expert(s) to support one enterprise in Thai Binh province specialized in mushroom and mushroom substrate production to research and develop a procedure to produce hydrolysed brewery yeast, which will be used for pilot mass production of mushroom substrate using hydrolysed brewery yeast at factory level and provide training on mushroom production to farmers of the project in preparation for the commercialisation of the tested products.

II.          Consultancy service description

1.    Objectives

Under the overall supervision of IBA Manager, the expert(s) will need to do the following:

  • Support the company with R&D activities
    • Research and develop a procedure to produce hydrolysed brewery yeast as supplemental nutrient for mushroom production
    • Test hydrolysed brewery yeast in mushroom substrate production to finalize mushroom substrate production procedure
  • Provide training to farmers on mushroom production, processing and marketing
    • Design a training curricula on mushroom production with participatory method and course agenda
    • Provide 30 01-day ToFs for mushroom farmers
  • Support the company with pilot production of mushroom substrate
    • Monitor pilot production of mushroom substrate at company level
    • Report on mushroom production productivity using tested product

2.    Description of work

- Support the company with R&D activities

  • Research and develop a procedure to produce hydrolysed brewery yeast as supplemental nutrient for mushroom production, including but not limited to
    • Test brewery yeast production at 3 temperature levels: 35- 400C; 50-55oC; 60-700C and hydroxylation duration in 24h; 48h; 36h. Testing sample size: 100 samples x 3 times
    • Record R&D results and complete hydrolysed brewery yeast production procedure
  • Test hydrolysed brewery yeast in mushroom substrate production to finalize mushroom substrate production procedure
    • Design and carry out experiments on the application of hydrolysed brewery yeast in mushroom substrate production. Supplement biomass produced with hydrolysed brewery yeast with a ratio of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Repeat experiment of each supplemental ratio at least 3 times
    • Supervise and monitor mushroom substrate production using hydrolysed brewery yeast
    • Record R&D results, analyse experiments and complete mushroom substrate production procedure

- Provide training to farmers on mushroom production, processing and marketing

  • Design a training curricula on mushroom production, processing and marketing with participatory method and course agenda
  • Provide 30 01-day ToFs for mushroom farmers

- Support the company with pilot production of mushroom substrate

  • Monitor pilot production of mushroom substrate at company level
    • Supervise and monitor pilot production of mushroom substrate at company level in 3 periods. Each period will last for 45 days
  • Report on mushroom production productivity using tested product
    • Record production yield, quality, etc.
    • Analyze the results of the pilot production and make recommendations

3.    Deliverables

  • A procedure to produce hydrolysed brewery yeast
  • R&D report on the application of hydrolysed brewery yeast in mushroom substrate production
  • A training curricula on mushroom production and course agenda
  • 30 01-day ToFs for mushroom farmers
  • A report on pilot mushroom substrate production at company level with recommendation for further upscale

III.        Qualifications, skills and experience required:

The consultant and/or group of consultants should meet the following requirements:

  • Leading Agro Technology and Agribusiness consultancy provider
  • Having good understanding on mushroom production and processing; 
  • Experience with training and developing training materials for mushroom production and processing;
  • Significant and intensive practical experience in supporting and facilitating farmer groups in different agriculture value chains from establishment to operation and sustainable management in Vietnam;
  • Having experienced in supply chain management in private sector/enterprises;
  • Being fluent in research methodologies (qualitative and quantitative methods);
  • Being able to deliver the committed outputs on time;
  • Having excellent analytical skills and report writing skill in English;
