Background information/context

The Project Improving nutritional status of ethnic minority children living in Northern mountainous areas will be implemented in Sop Cop & Bac Yen District, Son La Province. The main objectives are:

  • Project essential documents (implementation guidelines, training manuals and IEC materials on maternal and child nutrition care and NSA) are updated.
  • Relevant staff (from Heath, Agriculture sectors and Women’s Union) at commune and district levels have increased capacity to promote and carry out maternal and child nutritional care to targeted households
  • Relevant staff (from Heath, Agriculture sectors and Women Union) at commune and district levels have increased capacity to promote and implement nutrition-sensitive agriculture models

From 2017 to 2022, Save the Children collaborated with partners in Son La and Yen Bai Province to implement a similar project, named “Northern Mountain Integrated Child Nutrition Improvement Project – JSDF project. The Project brought positive impacts on the community in the project areas, especially a significant contribution to reducing the rate of malnutrition among children under 5 years old. One of the outstanding results achieved by the project is the development of appropriate training materials and IEC materials, thereby contributing to improving the capacity of project partners at all levels and mothers about maternal and child nutritional care. These results will be inherited and continue to be used in this project. Specifically, the training documents and IEC materials of the project will be updated and revised, ensuring the latest content on technical expertise and at the same time in line with the local context.

Objectives of the Consultancy: Update training manual and IEC materials on maternal and child nutrition care, which are updated new technic information, methodology and suitable with local context (cultural/ languages)

Location and official travel involved

The Consultants will be based outside the SCI office. Consultant is responsible for using his/her own IT equipment. The Consultant will be required to travel to Son La province. Any required travel will need approval by SCI in accordance with SCI’s Travel Policy.

Services the Consultant will provide

  • Task 1: Provide the review process for the training and IEC materials on maternal and child nutritional care of the JSDF project with most updated content on technical issues.
  • Task 2: Experiment the 1st revised version of the training and IEC materials on maternal and child nutritional care in Son La province, including experiments with target beneficiaries: mothers with child under 2 years old; pregnant women; medical staff at village, communal and district level in Bac Yen and Sop Cop district, as well as feedbacks from medical sector of Son la Province. Particularly, feedbacks from trainers at provincial level, trained by the JSDP project, will be a priority.
  • Task 3: Finalize the training and IEC materials (including artworks if necessary) to ensure the compliance of guidelines and regulations of Ministry of Health, as well as the cultural sensitivity of local language and SC’s regulations.

Experience and skill set required

  • Must possess a University degree in Medicine and a Postgraduate degree in Medicine or Public Health.
  • Have at least 7 years of working experience in health and nutrition field
  • Experience and skills on developing training manuals and IEC materials on maternal and child nutritional care.
  • Have experience and skills in working on maternal and child nutritional care with ethnic minority communities in the North.

General assumptions and dependencies

  • SC will provide related documents, such as project documents, training manuals and IEC materials on maternal and child nutritional care.
  • SC will make connection with local partners to support logistic of field survey and the organization of TOT training.

Payment information 

One payment will be made at the end of the contract. The contract includes consultancy fee, perdiem, accommodation and transportation costs, and fee for local participants.

This budget includes consultancy fee, perdiem, accommodation, transportation, fee for local participants and PIT which is withdrawn from total budget.
