One Health Demonstration Site Advisor

Veterinarians without Borders/Vétérinaires sans Frontières (VWB/VSF) provides volunteer placements for veterinarians and other animal and public health professionals.

VWB/VFS is currently co-funding the Volunteers Engaged in Gender Responsive Technical Solutions (VETS) project with Global Affairs Canada (GAC). The VETS project was established to improve the economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized people, particularly women and girls, in six countries, including Vietnam, through support to animal, human and environmental health initiatives.  The project utilises the skills of volunteers to support smallholder farmers, primarily women, to reduce poverty by improving family income and nutrition principally through improved production of livestock and crops. The program is built around the One Health concept, which recognizes that the health of people, animals and the natural environment are interconnected. It promotes the production of more and better food and increased incomes from livestock, all the while promoting land rehabilitation and conservation for sustainable development.

VWB/VSF is currently seeking a One Health Demonstration Site Advisor to support VWB/VFS partner organization in Vietnam, the Institute of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development (IEHSD).The main aim of the assignment will be to build the capacity of IEHSD and their local partners (Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, and Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy) to develop and deliver field-based One Health training curriculum.

The specific objectives of the assignment are to:

  • Provide guidance to IEHSD and local partner staff in the development of a field-based One Health curriculum, and build their capacity to deliver it to communities through training them in teaching and community engagement skills.
  • Assist IEHSD and local partner staff in implementing the One Health approach at the community level through the provision of technical support and as a trainer during One Health education activities.
  • Support local partners and community members in monitoring and evaluating the burden of infectious and zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance in their communities.

The assignment is for a period of one year starting in March 2021. The position will be based in Thai Nguyen with regular travel to Hanoi to work with IEHSD staff. The placement is open to citizens of Vietnam that are currently based in Vietnam.

Candidates will ideally have previous experience in the development and delivery of innovative field-based learning modules on One Health or other topics related to public health, veterinary medicine and/or animal production and health.

Other desired qualifications and skills include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, animal husbandry or related discipline, preferably at the postgraduate level.
  • High level understanding and ability to apply the principles of One Health.
  • Experience in teaching complex concepts to community stakeholders with limited technical understanding of the topic.
  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good working knowledge of English.
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Commitment to the principles of volunteer cooperation and familiarity with participatory approaches to development, including the promotion of gender equality, good governance and environmental sustainability.
  • Previous experience working on donor-funded projects.

Successful candidates will receive 1,500 Canadian Dollars per month.
