Project Officer/Field Team Leader

The Woolcock Institute is lung health research organisation, based at Sydney University, Australia (http://www.woolcock.org.au/). The Institute has operated in Vietnam since 2009, and is undertaking large and important operational and epidemiological research projects in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Program in 9 Provinces, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. Research in Vietnam currently focuses on tuberculosis but we anticipate that it will expand into other areas including programmatic management of chronic lung disease (asthma and COPD), air pollution research and preventive interventions that are relevant to lung health. The Woolcock also runs training in epidemiological and operational research methods for Vietnamese doctors and public health workers.

The Woolcock Institute is undertaking a new five year study of community-based screening of tuberculosis in Ca Mau Province. This study will run from 2013 to 2018.

Woolcock is looking for a motivated person who is willing to learn, service-oriented and able to work under high pressure and within a limited time frame to work with our organization in implementing our project in Ca Mau.

Role:

The field team leaders are responsible for overseeing a team of research staff and Commune Health Workers participating in the survey. The number of field teams will exceed the number actually conducting the surveys at the time, rotating in and out the Ca Mau so they can rest.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

- Visit selected clusters before fieldwork.
- Provide final map of area to be sampled.
- Lead the field team.
- Be responsible for logistics and organization during fieldwork.
- Coordinate the day-to-day fieldwork.
- Liaise the local, district and provincial authorities on issues regarding fieldwork.
- Provide a final field report to the survey coordinator at the end of fieldwork in each cluster.
- Liaise with Trial Coordinator (and other visiting field supervisors) on a regular basis.
- Report, without delay, any problems in implementing the research protocol in the field.
- Conduct health promotion activities in research clusters.
- Meet with local partners (including mass organizations, commune staff and other partners).
- Participate in training.
- Conduct screening in “?p”.
- Prepare daily and monthly activity reports for Trial Manager.
- Transport sputum to Ca Mau daily (during pilot study only).
- Assist Trial Coordinator with implementation of pilot techniques (video, mobile data entry, health promotion.

Required education, skills and qualities

Education:

- University degree in public health or related field
- Professional Experience:
- Preferably at least 2 years of experience in field work for research projects
- Professional use of personal computer utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software programs

Skills:

- Managerial skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent English (written and spoken) as preference
