Job description – Qualitative Researcher

Organisation: Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Vietnam

The Woolcock Institute is lung health research organisation, based at Sydney University, Australia (http://www.woolcock.org.au/). The Institute has operated in Vietnam since 2009, we undertake large and important operational and epidemiological and clinical research projects in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Program in 9 Provinces, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Woolcock also runs training in epidemiological and operational research methods for Vietnamese doctors and public health workers.

Currently the Woolcock directly employs 60 full-time 6 months appointment, with consideration for subsequent extension staff in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ca Mau.

Location: this person will work in Hanoi with frequent travel to Thanh Hoa, Ca Mau and HCMC.

Duration: 6 months appointment, with consideration for subsequent extension. This position will begin in March 2018. This person may choose to work on part-time of full-time basis.

Roles:

To participate in various qualitative studies, including a study of stigma upon patients with tuberculosis, a study on COPD/asthma, a study on smoking control, and a study on the use of digital medication box for improvement of adherence to TB treatment.

Reports to: VCAPS Study Coordinator, Principal Investigator, Country Director

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in training to fully understand the study protocol and requirements of data collection process
  • Work with partners to recruit patients into the study and get consent from participants to participate in the research
  • Conduct indepth interviews and focus group discussions with patients and health workers, exploring sensitive issues in an empathic and nuanced manner
  • Prepare field notes after completion of each interview
  • Summarising interview findings and identifying principal themes
  • Work with Australian researchers to interpret interview findings, and refine interview questions
  • Prepare reports on preliminary findings
  • Participate in workshops, meetings with study managers, PI and other stakeholders as requested
  • Communicate with the Study Managers, and the Chief Investigators on data collection process, results and issues if any

Required education, skills and qualities

Essential criteria:

  • Substantial experience conducting qualitative research, including in depth interviews, within the health care sector
  • Ability to perform analysis for qualitative interviews, either manually or using appropriate software (e.g. VIVO)
  • A high degree of empathy towards the feelings of others
  • Fluent Vietnamese
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work as a member of an international team, and independently

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience working with disadvantaged groups
  • Experience working with researchers within international organizations
  • An IELTS score of at least 6.0, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Public Health, or equivalent.
