Regional Technical Adviser

Short background:

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) is a regional river basin organisation. It was founded in 1995 by the riparian countries of the lower Mekong, namely Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. MRC is promoting alignment and integration of the different riparian countries’ interests in using the Mekong’s water and related resources for the sustainable development of agriculture, fisheries, hydropower, or navigation. Through the creation of the MRC, the four countries have committed themselves to joint planning in the basin. The two upstream riparian countries, China and Myanmar, are engaged in the MRC cooperation as dialogue partners.

German Development Cooperation supports the MRC in its effort to bolster regional cooperation and sustainable water resources management. The main areas of GIZ’s support are organisational development, adaptation to climate change, climate-sensitive flood management, and sustainable hydropower development
