Introduction:

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is now running the second phase of the 5-year project, from 2011-2015, funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.  This project is part of the Population Research Institute at Pennsylvania State University in the U.S. in collaboration with the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology under the Vietnam Academy for Social Sciences.  We are seeking staff for this project and related research falling under the title of “Families and Communities in Transition” (FACT).  This project will involve a mixed-methods data collection strategy including ethnographic data collection, survey data collection, geographic information analysis (GIA), and content analyses.  We are not seeking individuals with existing expertise in all these areas, but we are seeking individuals with a strong interest in gaining experience with a variety of research methodologies.

Job description: FACT in Vietnam is looking for qualified Vietnamese nationals to fill the position of Research Assistant. The working environment at FACT operates in English so good written and spoken English ability is required.  This position will involve a range of different quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies in the Nghe An province. If you decide to join FACT, you would be expected to travel frequently between the two locations and spend extensive time in Nghe An. We ask for a minimum of a 1-year commitment to the project.

Position information:

Position title: Research Assistant
Reporting to: Principle Investigator and assigned supervisor(s)
Contract: One year contract, renewed annually with successful completion of tasks. Work begins as soon as the positions are filled.
Work station: Hanoi with travels to project sites in Nghe An as required

Tasks:

1.Work with researchers in English on the development of both quantitative and qualitative data collection protocols, including testing questionnaires through focus groups, participating in ethnographic data collections, and ensuring accurate sampling/recruitment strategies are being met;
2.Supervise and oversee field staff in Nghe An;
3.Perform research activities related to the project and as assigned;
4.Work well with researchers in Hanoi and with local people in Nghe An;
5.Provide support for other activities as requested by the Principle Investigator and supervisor(s);
6.Assist in paper writing and research reports;
7.Assist with written translations from Vietnamese to English;

Qualifications/ Selection criteria:

  • University degree in social sciences or related fields (e.g., sociology, public health).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent in English, good reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
  • Good computer skills on Word, Excel, and e-mail (skills on statistical packages are desirable).
  • We are NOT interested in individuals with a finance, business, banking, or tourism background.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with local people.
