Research Coordinator

Orbis is a global non-profit organization headquartered in New York that works to prevent and treat avoidable blindness through hands-on training, public health education, and improved access to quality eye care, through partnerships with local health care organizations. Since 1982, Orbis has been a pioneer in global eye health, and has worked in 92 countries. Orbis’s story began with our first Flying Eye Hospital, a fully equipped mobile teaching hospital on board an aircraft. In addition to our Flying Eye Hospital programs, we have long-term programs in countries including Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, India, South Africa, Vietnam and Zambia – with additional programs in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Since 1996, Orbis has been collaborating with Vietnam’s ophthalmic communities to provide the highest level of expertise to support the development of eye care services and blindness prevention in Vietnam – especially in the areas of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), pediatric and cataract services, diabetic retinopathy and in establishing an eye bank. More recently, Orbis has worked to strengthen the eye health system in the country, focusing on the quality of services and human resources. Orbis plans to address the constraints of eye care system in Vietnam through three key strategies: expanding quality pediatric eye care services in more regions across the country; strengthening human resources for eye health; and increasing the availability of eye care services for diabetic patients.

To support the expansion of Orbis’ programs in Vietnam and the growing of the organization, we are seeking for a consultant to fill the position of Research Coordinator.

Main responsibilities:

The consultant, as a Research Coordinator, is required to work with Orbis International research team , the Queen University of Belfast’s research staff (QUB), and local partners to coordinate and manage the implementation of the research projects in Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang, to ensure efficient and high quality research operations in line with international standards; to contribute to the continued growth and development of Orbis’s research portfolio.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential requirements

  • Medical Doctor, Public health, Pharmacy, Nurse
  • Good understanding of general ethical considerations applicable to research and good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines and other relevant regulations in conducting studies, including clinical trials
  • Advanced level of English comprehension, including the ability to do translations from English to Vietnamese and vice versa
  • Excellent interpersonal communication/diplomatic skills with people of different backgrounds and social positions
  • Excellent Vietnamese language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing.

Desirable requirements

  • Master’s degree in public health, Health Sciences, Health Economics (foreign master’s degrees are preferred);
  • Experience of working in a research institution with involvement in research protocol and data collection tools development and IRB submission Experience of monitoring/managing research/studies, including both clinical trials/research and community-based studies
  • Experience in budgeting, monitoring budget and managing procurement
