Senior Research Associate

Organisation: Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Vietnam

The Woolcock Institute is lung health research organisation, based at Sydney University, Australia (http://www.woolcock.org.au/). The Institute has operated in Vietnam since 2009, we undertake large and important operational and epidemiological and clinical research projects in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Program in 9 Provinces, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Woolcock also runs training in epidemiological and operational research methods for Vietnamese doctors and public health workers.

Currently the Woolcock directly employs 60 full-time staff in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ca Mau.

Location: Hanoi with extended period of time in other provinces

Duration: 12 months appointment, with consideration for subsequent extension. This position will begin in November 2017.

Roles:

  1. Research oversight: Development and implementation of processes that ensure that research projects follow approved study protocols, as well as Vietnamese and Australian regulations, in keeping with appropriate ethical practice. This will include monitoring and evaluation of projects, including clinical trials.
  2. Facilitate new projects: Facilitating the timely commencement of new projects and researchcollaborations, including supporting new research teams and directly conducting pilot studies.
  3. Staff and student capacity building: Supporting capacity building of staff within the Woolcock, with our partners and research students. This may include training in project management, data management, monitoring, governance, ethics and communications.
  4. Supporting existing projects: Provide additional support, as required, to ensure current projects are implemented to a high standard.
  5. Supporting international collaborators: Supporting the visits of international faculty, students and collaborators to Vietnam. Contributing to the development of new sub-studies within existing projects.
  6. Supply chain management: Develop a process for ensuring efficient and accountable purchasing of goods, to be implemented by administrative staff.

  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent team leadership skills
  • Experience in overseeing large and complex projects in Vietnam
  • High level communicationin Vietnamese and English
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience managing medium to large teams
  • Skills in institutional capacity building
  • At least 5 years’ experience, at a senior level, in clinical or public health research or projects

Desirable characteristics

  • Knowledge of Vietnamese employment regulations
  • Experience working with data to improve project outcomes
  • Knowledge of Excel and common data management programmes (e.g. SPSS, EpiData, SAS).
  • Experience in supply chain management and medical education
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context and in developing country setting (preferably Vietnam)
  • Ability to think strategically, at both a systematic and a detailed level

Qualifications

  • PhD, or equivalent research experience, in a health-related field
